SA: Holden urged by SA premier to build electric Cruze

ADELAIDE, Aug 21 AAP - Holden has been urged to build an electric version of its four-cylinder
Cruze in South Australia by Premier Mike Rann.

Mr Rann held meetings in the United States with General Motors head Fritz Henderson
overnight Australian time.

GM Holden last year announced a second production line to build the Cruze model at
the company's plant in Elizabeth in Adelaide's north from late next year.

"That decision secured the future of the car manufacturer and the 9,000 jobs that rely
on the car industry in South Australia," Mr Rann said in a statement on Friday.

"And while the Cruze will be a fuel-efficient car, I would like to see the Elizabeth
plant manufacturing the same model but with an even greater fuel efficiency in the future
as the technology develops.

"Developing and adapting this new Holden four cylinder to even lower carbon emission
standards will further entrench our car manufacturing industry."
