NSW: Thumb severed during Sydney assault

A 61-year-old man has lost the tip of his thumb .. after being attacked by three youths
in Sydney's south.

Police say the trio turned on the man .. after he confronted them while they were damaging
a park bench at Harold Fraser Oval in Carss Park yesterday afternoon.

The youths hit the man with broken timber palings from the park bench.

Doctors at the Sydney Hand Hospital were unable to reattach the top of the man's thumb.
