QLD:UN concerned about LNG impact on reef
Premier ANNA BLIGH says she would welcome any visit by a team from the United Nation's
environmental arm to observe conservation efforts on Queensland's Curtis Island.
UNESCO's World Heritage Committee has expressed extreme concern at the Bligh government's
backing of planned multi-billion dollar LNG processing plants on the the island, which
is at the doorstep of the great barrier reef.
It's also criticised the federal government's failure to alert it, as per world heritage
guidelines, that the projects will go ahead.
Ms BLIGH says up to 80 per cent of Curtis Island, near Gladstone, has been set aside
for conservation and they are being very rigorous on their requirements of the new gas
companies.
