Winds Rekindle East Chicago's Smoldering Tires

Black smoke billowed briefly Friday from the tire fire in EastChicago, Ind., providing a pungent reminder that the three-week-oldblaze is still not out.

The early morning flare-up, fed by 25-m.p.h. winds, wassuppressed in less than an hour.

A similar, but smaller, burst of fire erupted Wednesday, cityspokesman Ron Rybarczyk said. The incidents occur as firefighterspull tires and shredded rubber out of the Rubber Materials HandlingCo. warehouse, where the fire began July 16.
